INTRODUCTION
The Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons is the
most prestigious, exclusive, and oldest medical institution in the world. The
British started the first Royal College in the year 1645, and admitted the most
famous doctors, who in turn, trained selected but few other physicians, and
honored them with distinct titles signifying membership in the Royal College of
Physicians (MRCP), as well as the College of Surgeons (MRCS
etc...).
After several years of experience, following the MRCP or MRCS award, physicians were selected
(not upon their own initiation or application) by the College for further screening and
evaluation of their background. They were then bestowed with the honor of becoming a
Fellow
(FRCP; FRCS), the highest ranks any physician could expect to
achieve in their lifetime. The esteemed Royal College consists of an exclusive
and honorable group of distinguished, eminent practitioners of medicine and surgery
around the world.
In keeping with current advances in
medical science and technology, the Royal College of the U.S.A. recognizes
interventional radiologists, interventional pain management specialists, spinal
endoscopists, gastroenterologists, laparoscopic general surgeons, neurologists,
and gynecologists performing minimally invasive procedures as candidates for
Membership and Fellowship in the Royal College of Surgeons. Percutaneous tissue
sparing techniques provide needle biopsy, laser and radiofrequency ablation,
tube insertion for drainage or feeding, embolization to stop bleeding, stent-grafting,
and precise delivery of chemotherapeutic agents without the need for general
anesthesia or open surgery or transfusion.
The physicians who achieve either the Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College are
authorized to use the titles: MRCP, MRCS, FRCP, FRCS, etc... on their
letter heads and or business cards. The moment physicians become members of fellows of
this distinct, elite, and professional organization, it creates a dramatic change in
esteem. This is the highest level of recognition and honor, a cumulative lifetime
achievement award in the medical professions.
In addition to Membership and Fellowship levels, the Royal College of Physicians and
Surgeons of the United States went further than other sister Royal Colleges to institute
the tiles of Master Physician and Master Surgeon awards
for physicians who already have achieved distinction and Fellowship status. These titles
are presented to certain, rare physicians of the highest distinction and
repute. Since 1984, the Royal College has conferred three Master Surgeon awards
to: Dr. Hussein, the former physician of the Prime Minister of India, Dr. DeBakey, a
top-notch, world-renowned cardiovascular surgeon, and most recently to
Dr. Leonard Malis, a distinguished neurosurgeon and Nobel
Medalist, inventor of prototype bipolar coagulation and microsurgery under binocular
microscope and many other useful scientific instruments used in Neurosurgery
today. Dr. Leonard Malis received the Ph.D. (honoris causa) in absentia at
the recent graduation. Other distinguished famous medical-scientist scholars and
physicians who were inducted as Fellows of the Royal College
recently, include Professor Lloyd A. Dayes, the Chairman of the Neurosurgery
Department at Loma Linda, the author of
numerous scientific articles whose gift for teaching inspired hundreds of
students and residents with a balance of didactic research and patient care.
Professor Dayes has stressed overcoming obstacles, accepting hard work, making
dreams into reality, and maintaining faith in God.
The following countries have a Royal College: United States of America (U.S.A.),
England, Ireland, Australia, South Africa, Canada, Thailand, etc. These are
sister colleges and are independent of one another.
The Royal College of the U.S.A. emphasizes quality of health care delivery, a
commitment to continuing education, and the use of science and art of medicine and surgery
to benefit others.
The membership level is granted upon examination of those
who are Board Certified specialists or equivalent, while the fellowship and master
levels are granted upon invitation and do not require a public examination. The Royal
College requires written and oral examinations. Candidates must achieve a minimum score of
75% aggregate on both exams. We also require letters of recommendation and consider the
total number of years of medical training, practice, research, and administration in the
health care fields.
In cooperation with few associations which offer an acceptable competitive examination
and screen their members for certification, the Royal College will accept or reciprocate
such written examinations as equivalent to that of the Royal College. Therefore,
if a candidate passes an approved written exam of an equally reputable association, the
Royal College will accept the score as equivalent, and will waive the written tests for
such candidates. If your association is interested in such and arrangement, we require a
sample of their exam; and we will determine its acceptability. We reserve the right to
accept, reject, or modify the exam to conform to the standard of the Royal College. The
written exam may be waived but there is no waiver for either the oral test and the fee for
the membership, fellowship, and master certificates.
If you want to know whether your association or a particular group is on our approved
list for written examination waivers, please contact the Royal College, and we
shall notify you as soon as possible.
You are welcomed to apply to our fine, distinguished medical institution which is
rooted in classical tradition. We have medical journals which circulate to members
and fellows, promoting continuing education; provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and
medical information between Royal College communities.
